The Monrovia Wildcats are entering the 2025 high school football season with renewed vigor and a clear objective: to clinch the Rio Hondo League (RHL) title. Under the guidance of Head Coach Jose Casagran, the Wildcats are returning with a roster brimming with talent and experience. Last season, the team posted an 8-3 overall record, finishing second in the RHL and making it to the first round of the CIF-SS Division 9 playoffs.
With a strong lineup of returning players and a few promising newcomers, the Wildcats are poised to make a significant impact this year. The team’s offensive prowess is spearheaded by sophomore quarterback Jesse Saucedo, who had a standout freshman year, throwing for 2,358 yards and 23 touchdowns. Saucedo’s performance is complemented by senior wide receivers and running backs Byron Bell and Troy Grise, both of whom earned first-team RHL honors last season.
Key Players and Strategic Strengths
Monrovia’s offensive lineup is not just about Saucedo. The team boasts a solid group of returning players who have already made a mark in the league. Byron Bell and Troy Grise are dual threats on both offense and defense, each having secured RHL first-team honors. Bell ran for 798 yards and nine touchdowns, while Grise contributed with 621 receiving yards and four touchdowns, in addition to his 500 rushing yards.
Defensively, the Wildcats are equally formidable. Linebacker Lucas Martinez, who led the RHL in tackles with 124 last season, is back, bringing his tenacity and leadership to the field. He is joined by defensive end Kaleb Ellison and free safety Evan Ricketts, both key players in the defensive lineup.
“Over the past two years, the team has developed a tougher, grittier identity,” said Coach Jose Casagran. “They practice hard and play even harder—a reflection of the dedication they’ve shown in the weight room and on the field over the past eight months.”
Challenges and Expectations
Despite their offensive firepower, the Wildcats face challenges on the defensive side. Last season, they allowed 20 or more points in seven games, a statistic they are keen to improve. However, with the experience and skill of returning players, there is optimism that the defense will rise to the occasion.
The Wildcats are considered favorites in the RHL, especially after South Pasadena claimed the league title last year. Even if their defense struggles, Monrovia’s ability to score makes them a formidable opponent. Their non-league schedule is manageable, setting the stage for a potential 7-3 or 8-2 regular season.
Coach’s Vision and Team Goals
Coach Casagran is confident about the team’s prospects. “The team is aiming to win the final Rio Hondo League championship this season. It’s a tough, competitive league, but we expect to be right in the mix,” he stated. The Wildcats are also eyeing a strong playoff run, with aspirations for a CIF title. However, much depends on their playoff placement and maintaining player health throughout the season.
“Depth is always a challenge at most high schools, and we’re no exception. Keeping our key players on the field will be essential if we’re going to achieve our goals this season,” Casagran added.

The Wildcats’ journey begins on August 22 against Brentwood, followed by a series of matches that will test their mettle. Key games include a face-off with South Pasadena on October 3, a team that poses a significant challenge in their quest for the RHL title.
