Missing 4-Year-Old Found Safe Thanks to Community Effort in Newport

NEWPORT — In a heartwarming turn of events, a 4-year-old child reported missing in the Bryant Town community was found safe and sound on Saturday evening. The search, which involved multiple agencies and community members, concluded successfully thanks to the efforts of a concerned citizen.

The Cocke County Emergency Management Agency (CCEMA) had initially raised the alarm at around 4 p.m., utilizing social media and text alerts to notify the public about the missing child, affectionately known as JoJo. The community quickly mobilized, deploying trucks, law enforcement vehicles, fire engines, drones, and search dogs in a coordinated search effort.

Community Hero Steps Forward

Among those who responded to the call was Ricky McMahan, a local resident who decided to search his property for JoJo. According to Esway, a spokesperson for the search operation, McMahan’s instincts led him to a dense area of trees on his private property. There, he discovered JoJo, who was unharmed and eager to be reunited with his family.

“After all of the vehicles, personnel, dogs, drones and everything we had, it was a concerned citizen with two precious grandchildren about JoJo’s age who decided to do what he could to help,” Esway remarked. “In the end, it was a concerned neighbor who took care of his community.”

Esway expressed profound gratitude towards McMahan, telling him, “If you do nothing else for the rest of your days, sleep well knowing you most certainly saved a life today.”

Coordinated Effort by Local Authorities

The search operation was a testament to the dedication of local agencies. Derrick Woods, utilizing his drone, cleared all swimming pools in the vicinity, ensuring no stone was left unturned. The Newport Rescue Squad Search and Rescue Team, Cocke County Fire Department, 911 dispatchers, Cocke County Sheriff’s Office, Newport City Police Department, Newport City Fire Department, Priority Ambulance, and Cocke County Property Assessor Macie Reed were all actively involved.

Esway noted that the leaders of each department, including Cocke County Sheriff C.J. Ball, Newport Police Chief Scott Lamb, Newport Fire Chief Jeremy Shelton, and Cocke County Fire Chief Cody Keys, were not merely overseeing the operation from a distance. Instead, they were actively participating alongside their teams, often with their spouses accompanying them to assist.

“None of them monitored events from their radio. Each of them (were) searching with the men and women under their charge, or (were) a part of the incident command structure. This is a phenomenal community,” Esway said.

Community Spirit and Future Implications

The successful conclusion of the search was announced on social media at 6:25 p.m., bringing relief and joy to the community. JoJo was found to be in good health, a testament to the swift and effective response of everyone involved.

This incident highlights the power of community and the importance of local engagement in emergency situations. The collective effort of both professionals and citizens underscores a strong sense of unity and responsibility that can serve as a model for other communities.

Looking ahead, the Newport community is likely to reflect on this experience, potentially leading to enhanced protocols for future emergencies. The collaboration between citizens and authorities has set a precedent for how communities can come together in times of need, ensuring the safety and well-being of their members.

As the community celebrates JoJo’s safe return, the story serves as a reminder of the impact individuals can have when they choose to step up and make a difference.
