HERMOSA BEACH — As Dalton Knecht stood beside El Pollo Loco’s first food truck at Hermosa Beach Pier Plaza, he was not just promoting new menu items but also marking a significant milestone. It was precisely a year since the Los Angeles Lakers selected him with the No. 17 pick in the NBA draft. The event served as a moment of reflection for Knecht, who has seen a whirlwind of changes in his rookie season.
“That’s crazy,” Knecht remarked to the Southern California News Group. “Quick year. Quick year.” Indeed, the year was not only swift but also transformative, as Knecht embraced off-the-court opportunities, including partnerships with El Pollo Loco and Lemon Daddy, the latter featuring him on billboards across Southern California.
Despite the commercial success, basketball remains Knecht’s primary focus. His damp hair during the meet-and-greet was a testament to his commitment, having come directly from a workout at the Lakers’ El Segundo practice facility. “Went by kind of quick,” Knecht said of his rookie season. “But also at the same time, it was a good learning lesson. Got to learn from a lot of good people. It was a dream come true just playing and being in the NBA.”
Rookie Year: A Season of Highs and Lows
Knecht’s rookie journey was marked by both promising performances and challenging setbacks. Initially part of the team’s rotation as a reserve, he soon found himself in the starting lineup by mid-November. This period saw him achieve his best stretch, averaging 14.2 points per game with impressive shooting percentages.
In a standout performance on November 19, Knecht scored a career-high 37 points against the Utah Jazz, tying an NBA rookie record with nine 3-point shots on 12 attempts.
However, adversity struck when his playing time diminished, particularly in January. A trade to the Charlotte Hornets, which was later rescinded, added to the uncertainty. Although he rejoined the Lakers, his role was less consistent, and he ended the season out of the main rotation, averaging 9.1 points, 2.8 rebounds, and 1.6 made 3s over 78 games.
Building Relationships and Skills
In the offseason, Knecht has focused on strengthening his relationship with Lakers coach JJ Redick. “After the season we had a talk and stuff like that,” Knecht said. “And we’ve been doing a workout. We’ve got lunch and stuff. Just talking and getting to know each other more and then being able to communicate with each other.”
Redick, known for his shooting prowess, has been working closely with Knecht on shooting drills. “It’s good just getting to the gym with your head coach. Learn from him, because he’s a great shooter as well,” Knecht added.
Looking Ahead to the Summer League
Knecht is set to play for the Lakers’ summer league team for the second consecutive year. He will be joined by fellow 2024 draftee Bronny James, 2025 second-round pick Adou Thiero, and former Villanova star Eric Dixon, who recently signed a two-way contract with the Lakers.
“Just showing what I can do,” Knecht said of his summer league goals. “Feel like I kind of showed a little bit throughout my rookie year, but just keep building on top of that.”
Implications for the Future
The upcoming summer league represents an opportunity for Knecht to solidify his place within the team and showcase his development. His journey reflects the broader challenges faced by many NBA rookies, balancing the pressures of performance with personal growth and adaptation.
As the Lakers continue to refine their roster, Knecht’s progress will be closely watched. His ability to leverage his rookie experiences and offseason training could be crucial in determining his role in the upcoming season.
In conclusion, Dalton Knecht’s rookie year has been a blend of rapid changes, learning experiences, and personal achievements. As he prepares for the summer league, his focus remains on growth and contribution to the Lakers’ future successes.
