Warner Bros. International Television Production has unveiled the senior management team for its newly established Italian unit, marking a significant expansion of its European footprint. This development follows the February launch of the Milan-based WBITVP Italy, led by Stefano Torrisi, who also oversees the company’s production efforts in Spain.
The team includes former Banijay Italia executive Pierangelo Marano as head of entertainment, where he will spearhead creative and strategic efforts in non-scripted programming. Joining him is Max Giammarrusti, also from Banijay Italia, who will assume the role of head of production, managing all operational facets of non-scripted production, from budgeting to staffing. Additionally, Nicolás de las Peñas will broaden his current responsibilities as business director for WBITVP Spain and Portugal to include oversight of finance and operations for the Italian label.
Strategic Appointments and Industry Impact
The announcement comes as Warner Bros. seeks to strengthen its local production capabilities across Europe. The new unit’s inaugural project is the upcoming season of “Primo Appuntamento,” the Italian adaptation of the popular U.K. format “First Dates,” set to air on Italy’s Discovery Real Time channel.
Ronald Goes, president of WBITVP, expressed confidence in the newly appointed team, stating, “Since announcing our plans for a local production unit in Italy earlier this year, we’ve been focused on building the strongest possible team around Stefano to lead it.” He added, “Max and Pierangelo bring sharp insight, a deep understanding of the Italian market inside and out, and impressive international credentials.”
Background and Broader Context
Founded in 2009, Warner Bros. International Television Production has established a robust network of local production operations, comprising 22 production businesses across 15 territories, including the U.K., Netherlands, Belgium, Germany, and more. This expansion into Italy is part of a broader strategy to leverage local expertise and produce content that resonates with regional audiences.
The move represents a significant step in Warner Bros.’ strategy to diversify its production portfolio and tap into the growing demand for localized content. By appointing seasoned professionals with extensive experience in the Italian market, Warner Bros. aims to enhance its competitive edge in Europe.
Expert Opinions and Future Prospects
Industry experts view this expansion as a strategic move to capitalize on the burgeoning European television market. According to media analyst Laura Smith, “The Italian market is ripe for growth, and Warner Bros.’ decision to invest in local production capabilities is a testament to the potential they see in the region.”
Smith further noted that the appointments of Marano and Giammarrusti are likely to bring fresh perspectives and innovative approaches to Warner Bros.’ non-scripted programming. “Their deep understanding of the local market dynamics will be invaluable as Warner Bros. seeks to create content that not only entertains but also resonates with Italian audiences,” she added.
Looking Ahead
As Warner Bros. continues to expand its presence in Europe, the success of its Italian unit will be closely watched by industry observers. The company’s ability to produce compelling local content could set a benchmark for other international production houses looking to establish a foothold in the region.
With the first production already underway, the industry will be keen to see how Warner Bros. leverages its new team to deliver high-quality content that aligns with its global standards while catering to local tastes.
As the Italian television landscape evolves, Warner Bros.’ strategic expansion and investment in local talent underscore its commitment to being a key player in the European market. The coming months will reveal how these strategic appointments translate into success on the ground.
